2024 in Spain (Cádiz)

visiting southern Spain's seaside flamenco town

On August 29, 2024, the Celebrity Equinox cruise stopped in Cádiz, Spain for a few hours. Cádiz lies in southern Spain in a region known as Andalusia (Spanish: Andalucía). The densely-populated port consists of a peninsula in which its inhabitants are never far away from the sea.

Many cruise-goers who arrive here opt to go inland and visit Seville, a city which can take up to a 2 hour bus ride away during peak season. I chose to say in Cádiz to take an excursion into the seaside town and see a show with flamenco dancing, a specialty of the region.

Some highlights include:

  • Catedral de Cádiz
  • Plaza de las Flores
    • shopping district
  • Mercado Central de Abastos de Cádiz
    • central market near the aforementioned plaza
  • Parque Genovés
    • a seaside park with some interesting plant life
  • Tablao Flamenco La Cava
    • a flamenco bar with lunch-time performances for cruise passengers who cannot attend the evening shows (by excursion only)

Reflections

I would not mind coming back to Càdiz. Since the excursion tour took us far from the beach (and I didn't want to risk running back to the pier), I will have to go to the beach the next time. I also wanted to browse the Genovese Park more thoroughly, so I have a couple of good reasons to come back.

If I really have even more time to spare in this region, I would go to Seville and experience "the hype" first-hand.
