2016 in Bahamas (Nassau)

17th country - the Canada of the Caribbean

On November 16, 2016, the Norwegian Breakaway cruise brought me to Nassau, the capital city of The Bahamas, resulting in the visit of my 17th country:

This made it my:

  • 1st time in The Bahamas
  • 2nd time in the Caribbean

With Bahamas off the list, It also now made Cuba the closest country (to my home city of Toronto) that I have not yet visited.

Visit

I took an excursion tour to visit the following in Nassau:

  • Parliament Square
  • Fort Fincastle
  • Queen's Staircase

The bus tour also included a cruise-within-a-cruise that approached some of the islands off the coast of Nassau such as Paradise and Athol. After the tour, there was some free time to drink some Kalik beer and just relax.

Reflection

The Bahamas is a decent part of the Caribbean and I would recommend visiting it at least once. Rather than looking like some islands off the coast of Miami, Florida, the Bahamas almost felt like a warmer version of Canada:

  • The currency had the monarch Queen Elizabeth II on its banknotes
  • Streets were named after British royalty

However, a growing trend in Caribbean republicanism (case in point: Barbados) might result in other Caribbean island countries switching to a more localized flavour in the next few decades.
