On August 27, 2014, the Europe bus tour took me from Paris, France to Waterloo, Belgium for a brief stop, which resulted in the visit of my 15th unique country:

This made it my:

  • 1st Dutch-speaking country
  • 1st time in Belgium
  • 9th European country

Visit

This brief stop was to visit the site of the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815, that resulted in Napoleon surrendering and losing the Napoleonic Wars.

Dominating the site is a large, conical and grassy "Lion's Mound" (French: Butte de Lion), which was built about a decade after the battle. It commemorates the site of the wounding of Prince William of Orange (who would later become King of the Netherlands in 1840).

After a quick lunch at Le Bivouac, the tour bus passed through Antwerp and then headed to Amsterdam.
