On August 29, 2003, the Navigator of the Seas cruise took me to Cozumel, Mexico, resulting in the visit of my 6th unique country:

This made it my:

  • 1st time in Mexico
  • 1st country where Spanish was an official language
  • 1st country in which neither English nor French was an official language
  • 5th country in North America (including Central America)
  • 1st time in Central America

Visit

Going with a cruise line excursion, I took a ferry from Cozumel Island to Playa del Carmen on the Mexican mainland. From there, an air-conditioned bus would take us to the Mayan ruins of Tulum. A Mayan guide named José told us a lot about the interesting peculiarities of his culture.

Reflection

At the time, I had an open and curious mind when it came to any country that had its differences from my own. I felt quite entertained at seeing the Mayan ruins and also meeting an actual Mayan, as the year 2012 creeped up soon enough. I did not know if I would ever return to Mexico again.

Maybe someday?
